I’ve been experimenting with natural dyes again. It’s fascinating to find useful plants around us that color wool. So far, I’ve dyed with walnut, eucalyptus, lichens and a few varieties of mushrooms. Oh, the current dye pot has Toyon, a bush with little red berries similar to the Pyrocantha that I grew up with. It’s actually the stems and leaves that you cut upand cook to create dye . My goal is to knit a hat or mittens in a Fair Isle pattern using natural sheep wool colors and natural dyes. Since we have had a fair amount of rain lately, I have been focusing on mushrooms. I found a lot of information about local California mushrooms, in this mushroom article on Fibershed’s main site. And of course I’ve used Rebecca Burgess’s, Harvesting Color for general information on different kinds of plants.
